Von Leon is a good choice because of boss flames, pensalir is a good set because it's pretty common and can still be traded after use, so you could even have some decent potential on them and move them around as you make characters. The bigger problem is that familiars will disappear when changing channels, and the way Ranmaru is designed is to pull you to a different (private, I believe) channel upon entering.
